SSL certificates FAQ

SSL certificates are digital certificates that authenticate your website’s identity and allow for the secure transmission of sensitive information, such as credit card data.

They give your website an “https://” address, which allows browsers to encrypt data in a way that makes it unreadable to potential third-party eavesdroppers and other malicious entities.

SSLs form a vital security component. They reassure potential customers of your website’s legitimacy and trustworthiness. They also make your site PCI DSS-compliant.

Domains without an SSL certificate will not be seen as secure by Google and will have their search ranking penalized.

A managed SSL certificate refers to an SSL certificate that is provided by a managed hosting provider or managed service provider. Instead of the website or server owner being responsible for managing the SSL, the certificate is handled entirely by the host.

Before choosing a type of SSL certificate, we recommend considering the following factors:

  • The number of domains you’re hosting
  • The general structure of your site or server
  • Compliance or encryption requirements
  • The level of hosting support you may need
  • If your SSL certificate will need to scale in the future
  • Compatibility with your visitors’ preferred browser
  • The type of hosting service you’re using (hosted VPS, dedicated server, and so on)

SSL certificates serve the same purpose for dedicated servers and websites. The key difference between the two is how the SSL certificates are implemented.

Server SSL certificates are configured at the server level to enable HTTPS connections. This secures the connection and communication of data from a server to a client. Server-level settings can be made for SSL protocol versions and private keys.

Website SSL certificates are configured at the website level, often within a web hosting control panel. If your web hosting plan isn’t a dedicated server, you’ll probably use a website SSL certificate. Once installed and configured, the website SSL certificate authenticates a website and displays a padlock in most web browsers.

SSL certificates lower bounce rates, improve SEO, keep transaction data safe from hackers, and show your customers that you are an authentic business. More than that, they offer warranty protection if the SSL certificate fails. That means you receive compensation in the rare case of failure. In that way, SSL certificates are like an insurance policy—with daily perks that drive revenue.

Your visitors will not see your website immediately. Without an SSL, most browsers will display a warning that your website is not secure and personal data may be compromised. Visitors may never visit your website again, or worse, they may tell others not to visit your website.

The warranty value is the amount you’re covered for financially, if something goes wrong with your SSL certificate due to the certificate authority. Read more.
