Servers and server management have evolved, and remote access has become crucial. If Windows is your preferred OS, you need an RDP VPS. Remote Desktop Protocol is Microsoft’s solution for allowing users to access the desktop of an internet-hosted server from anywhere.

When you order a Windows VPS from Liquid Web, we make sure your Windows OS installed and the server is set up for Remote Desktop connections.

RDP and VPS are different, but compatible technologies. Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a protocol for remote access to a computer or server. A VPS is a virtualized server that provides dedicated hosting resources. You can use an RDP to access a Windows VPS.

RDP is a popular solution, so it’s also a common target of brute force attacks. Fortunately, there are some best practices to minimize your exposure:

  1. Use a VPN.
  2. Deploy a hardware firewall.
  3. Identify trusted IP addresses.
  4. Scope the RDP firewall rule appropriately.
  5. Change the RDP port.

For details on each one, see Securing RDP.

  1. Open Administrative Tools.
  2. Double-click on Computer Management.
  3. Expand Local Users and Groups.
  4. Right-click on Users and select New User.
  5. Enter the requested information into the New User dialog window and click Create.
  6. Under Local Users and Groups, select Groups, then double click Remote Desktop Users.
  7. Click Add.
  8. Enter the user name of the user you wish to grant RDP access.
  9. Click Check Names and the user name should update to the format servernameusername.
  10. Click OK.
