How to create a temporary login for WordPress
Maybe you’ve hired a developer to fix a bug, or you need to let a support team look into an issue. Creating a full user account just for a quick task clutters up your dashboard—and resetting passwords every time isn’t safe. Instead, use a temporary login link.
Temporary logins let someone access your WordPress site without a password, for a limited time, and with the access level you choose.

Why use a temporary login in WordPress?
Instead of manually creating a user and deleting them later, temporary logins give you an easier, safer way to collaborate. Here’s why:
- You don’t have to share or reset your own password.
- Access can expire automatically after a set number of hours or days.
- Temporary users won’t stay on your site permanently or clutter your user list.
- You control exactly what role or permissions they have—Administrator, Editor, etc.
- You can revoke access at any time with a single click.
This is ideal for agencies, freelancers, support teams, or short-term contributors who only need brief access.
1. Install and activate the Temporary Login Without Password plugin
There are multiple ways to create temporary logins, but the easiest is with the Temporary Login Without Password plugin by StoreApps. It’s free, regularly updated, and doesn’t require any coding.
To install it:
- Log into your WordPress dashboard.
- Go to Plugins > Add New.
- In the search bar, type Temporary Login Without Password.
- Click Install Now next to the plugin by StoreApps.
- Click Activate when the install finishes.
Once active, a new menu item appears under Users.
2. Create a temporary login link
The plugin makes it easy to generate a login link you can send to someone else.
- In your dashboard, go to Users > Temporary Logins.
- Click the Create New button.
- Fill out the form:
- Email Address (required)
- First Name and Last Name (optional)
- User Role – choose from Subscriber, Contributor, Author, Editor, or Administrator.
- Expiry – choose how long the link stays active (from 1 day to 1 year).
- Click Submit.
You’ll get a unique, secure login URL. This lets the user log in immediately—no password needed.
3. Share the login link securely
Now that the link is ready, share it with your collaborator. Here are a few tips:
- Send it over email, Slack, or another trusted communication channel.
- Let the person know when the link will expire.
- Ask them to bookmark the link if they’ll need to log in more than once.
- Remind them not to share it with anyone else.
Each link is unique and tied to that user only.
4. Manage or revoke temporary logins
You might need to manage or revoke a temporary login to prevent unauthorized access once the task is complete or if the user no longer needs entry to the site.
- Go to Users > Temporary Logins to view all active links.
- You’ll see each user’s email, role, creation date, and expiration date.
- If someone is done working on your site, click Revoke to cancel their login early.
You can also copy or resend a login link if needed, and create new ones anytime.
