Tech habits that help successful people achieve more

What role does technology play in achieving success?

To uncover the habits of high achievers, we surveyed Americans about their tech usage, preferences, and productivity strategies.

Successful individuals were defined as those excelling in their careers, relationships, health, and personal growth while earning $100,000 or more annually. Respondents who met these criteria offer unique insights into how they use technology to stay productive and maintain balance.

From device preferences to social media habits, this study reveals the tools and strategies that set them apart.

Key points

  • High achievers love their screens: On average, they spend 7 hours on their computer, primarily for productivity, and 3 hours on their phone, primarily for entertainment, every day.
  • 44% of successful people take tech-free breaks at least once daily, and another 17% take one at least once weekly.
  • Avoiding TikTok could lead to success: Nearly 1 in 2 successful Americans (49%) don't use the platform.
  • Reddit is the most popular social media platform among high achievers, with 39% using it frequently.
  • Apple over Google: Successful people are nearly twice as likely to consider an iPhone essential (63%) compared to an Android (34%).

Screen time strategies of successful people

High achievers balance screen time by focusing on productivity and minimizing distractions. Their habits reveal how technology can support success without taking over daily life.

High achievers spend significant time on their screens but with clear intent. They averaged 7 hours daily on their computers, primarily for productivity, and 3 hours on their phones, mostly for entertainment.

This contrasts sharply with average Americans, who spend 23% more time on their phones. Successful individuals spent 9% more time on their computers and were 6% more likely to use them for productive tasks than the average person.

Their screentime approach extends to their work habits, with 43% of successful individuals checking work-related emails and messages outside work hours and 36% responding after hours. These rates are notably higher than their average counterparts, which were 38% and 29%, respectively.

Successful Americans employed various strategies to manage screen time: 18% used focus modes to eliminate distractions, while 44% took tech-free breaks daily, and 17% did so weekly. In comparison, 38% of average Americans took tech-free breaks daily, with 24% opting for weekly ones.

Social media usage reflects the focused mindset of successful individuals. Reddit emerged as their platform of choice, with 39% using it frequently.

Many high achievers limited or avoided platforms perceived as less beneficial. For instance, 49% said they don't use TikTok, including 46% of younger successful Americans (millennials and Gen Z).

Successful people were less likely than the average person to limit LinkedIn usage (7% vs. 12%, respectively). They were also much more engaged on this platform, with only 17% of high achievers not using LinkedIn compared to 38% of average Americans.

Time management topped the list of productivity strategies, with 66% of successful Americans prioritizing calendars and scheduling tools as their go-to hack.

AI chatbots ranked second, with 40% leveraging this new technology to boost productivity.

Compared to average Americans, successful individuals were 32% more likely to use calendar and scheduling tools and 11% more likely to rely on AI chatbots to optimize their workflows. These tools have enabled them to maintain focus, manage time effectively, and achieve their goals more efficiently.

For successful individuals, Apple products reigned supreme, with 63% considering an iPhone essential – nearly twice as many as those who value an Android (34%). Compared to the average American, successful people were 24% more likely to prioritize an iPhone as a must-have device.

When it comes to work, laptops outshined desktops for successful Americans, who were 32% more likely to view a laptop as essential. By contrast, the average American considers desktops (42%) slightly more important than laptops (39%).

Successful individuals also gravitated toward premium tech: 36% preferred premium products (i.e., higher end, more expensive, etc.), while only 24% opted for budget-friendly options, and 40% said they make decisions based on the product itself.

For the average American, preferences were quite the opposite, with 18% favoring premium products, 39% choosing budget-friendly options, and 43% basing their choice on the product type.

These findings indicate that successful people are more willing to invest in high-quality tools that support their goals.

The tech-driven habits of high achievers

How successful people use technology offers a roadmap for others. High achievers prioritize productivity-focused tools like laptops and apps while taking intentional breaks from screens to stay balanced.

They avoid time-sucks like TikTok and invest in high-quality devices that enhance their workflow and lifestyle.

By managing their screen time and embracing tools that optimize productivity, successful Americans demonstrate how thoughtful tech usage can play a key role in achieving and sustaining success.
