The rise of AI ecommerce

AI might just be ecommerce’s next power move. Learn how ecommerce is evolving in our latest study.

Can AI chatbots and product descriptions really boost ecommerce sales?

AI is changing how online stores connect with customers and convert traffic into sales. From auto-generating product descriptions to powering customer service chatbots, ecommerce businesses are adopting AI tools to streamline operations and improve performance.

Liquid Web surveyed 623 online store owners to understand how AI-generated product content and chatbots are affecting engagement, revenue, and customer satisfaction.

The findings highlight which industries are leading adoption, what results they’re seeing, and how store owners are adapting to challenges like AI scraping.

Key findings

  • Over 1 in 4 (27%) use an AI chatbot for customer service or sales, and 3 in 4 of these businesses report an average 20% increase in sales or leads.
  • 1 in 10 saved 25% per month on customer support costs after implementing AI chatbots.
  • 1 in 6 (17%) saw an increase in direct traffic from AI-powered search results.

AI-generated product description adoption

AI-generated product descriptions have gained traction across several industries, with marketing, tech, and hospitality businesses at the forefront. Adoption is especially strong among WooCommerce store owners, where the impact has been both measurable and meaningful.

Data points showing the impact of AI-generated product descriptions on ecommerce businesses: 1 in 2 have used AI generated product descriptions, commonly leading to more engagement and positive feedback.

AI use in ecommerce has grown rapidly in recent years, increasing by 270% since 2019, which represents a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of roughly 38%. This surge has been driven in part by the rise of tools that generate product content at scale.

What began as a trend among large marketplaces has increasingly become standard practice for small and midsize retailers looking to streamline content creation.

Nearly half (47%) of all ecommerce businesses have used AI-generated product descriptions. Among WooCommerce users specifically, about 3 in 5 (58%) reported using them.

Of those WooCommerce users, 63% experienced more engagement on product listings, including increased clicks, views, and impressions. Another 41% said AI-generated descriptions contributed to increased revenue, and 22% received more positive customer reviews or feedback.

The growing adoption aligns with clear business benefits. These results suggest that AI content may support better buyer experiences and performance outcomes, especially for businesses already operating within WooCommerce’s flexible ecosystem.

AI chatbots drive sales, satisfaction, and conversions

AI chatbots are helping ecommerce businesses streamline customer interactions and drive revenue-related outcomes.

Businesses across industries are seeing measurable improvements from chatbot adoption, with those in retail, tech, and marketing leveraging them the most.

A gathering of statistics shows the top outcomes after ecommerce businesses added AI chatbots for customer service or sales. 1 in 4 have used an AI chatbot for customer service or sales, and 45% of respondents report improved customer satisfaction

Among the 27% of ecommerce businesses that have used an AI chatbot for customer service or sales, 75% reported a sales or lead increase, averaging 20%. Additionally, 1 in 10 businesses reported lowering their customer support expenses by 25% or more each month after adopting AI chatbots.

Among WooCommerce users, 37% said they currently use AI chatbots for customer service or sales, with 56% seeing a lift in leads or sales after adopting this new tech. WooCommerce stores also reported notable measurable business impact: 62% saw improved customer satisfaction, and 43% experienced higher conversion rates.

These findings reflect a growing confidence in chatbots as a practical tool to engage shoppers and improve bottom-line results.

How AI scraping is shaping traffic, engagement, and content strategy

As AI-driven tools change how shoppers discover and interact with ecommerce brands, businesses are seeing both opportunities and tradeoffs.

We’ll now look at how AI scraping is influencing traffic, engagement, and security strategies across platforms like WooCommerce and Magento.

A statistical breakdown examining how businesses are rethinking AI scraping policies. 76% are satisfied with their current approach, correlated to most seeing an increase in direct traffic from AI-powered search.

About 1 in 6 (17%) ecommerce businesses saw an increase in direct traffic from AI-powered search results. At the same time, 12% saw more visitors from AI search but noted fewer direct conversions.

Some businesses reported engagement shifts, with 11% experiencing higher consumer interaction through AI chatbots and discovery tools and 10% seeing more brand mentions in AI-generated content.

Responses among WooCommerce users reflected a mix of adaptation and concern:

  • 11% said they’re considering unblocking AI bots.
  • 12% reported increased server load and security costs.
  • 12% saw increased revenue from AI-driven traffic and referrals.
  • 13% have added security measures like CAPTCHAs, firewalls, or bot blocking.
  • 18% had to invest more in proprietary content strategies like paywalls or gated content.

These findings suggest businesses are actively weighing the value of AI exposure against its operational impact.

“As adoption grows, so does complexity. Ecommerce leaders need to think beyond just what AI can do and start planning for how to manage the operational impact.”

Ecommerce businesses embrace AI while managing its tradeoffs

AI adoption is gaining momentum across ecommerce, especially among WooCommerce stores in industries like marketing, tech, and retail. Businesses are seeing clear value in AI-generated content and chatbots, with many reporting gains in engagement, sales, and customer satisfaction.

Still, AI scraping has introduced new concerns around traffic quality, content strategy, and infrastructure costs.

These results show a growing need to balance AI-driven opportunities with operational considerations.

“AI in ecommerce is evolving fast, and this study makes one thing clear: store owners are willing to adopt new tools when there’s a clear ROI.”
