DayZ VPS: Why set up a private server?

There are a lot of challenges to overcome in DayZ, but server lag should not be one of them. Imagine flawless game play, no downtime, and full control over server settings.

VPS stands for virtual private server. It’s when a hosting company (that’s us) uses virtualization software to spawn multiple smaller, virtual servers from a single physical game server.

Why would we do that?

Because you probably don’t need the kind of compute power that an entire physical server would provide. And you definitely don’t want to pay for all that extra server space to sit around unused.

Note: You absolutely can rent an entire dedicated server for DayZ if you want to. And if your game is big enough to use it, you absolutely should have a dedicated machine.

How to create a DayZ server: requirements

The first thing you’ll need to do is rent a server. Liquid Web lets you customize your VPS to get exactly what you need, so let’s talk about DayZ requirements first.

Intel Core i5-4430 or equivalent
At least 4 GB RAM
At least 20 GB disk space (The game will fit in around 10GB of free space but with mods and addons you will quickly exceed that.
SSD for storage is highly recommended

Remember these are bare minimum requirements. I’d actually recommend starting with:

Dual/quad core CPU
At least 8 GB RAM
At least 20+ GB disk SSD (RAID-protected SSD is standard on Liquid Web’s cloud VPS)

You can run your DayZ VPS on Windows or Linux, but remember each OS has its own requirements for running dedicated gaming servers. (Windows OS is much heavier, which will increase your server costs. I recommend Linux.)

For Windows, you’ll need at minimum:

6 GB of memory
32 GB of hard disk space
Licensing, at about $33/month

To run your server on Linux, you need at minimum:

2 CPU Cores
4 GB of memory
25 GB of hard disk space

How to create a private DayZ server on Linux

Once you have the server established, I suggest the simple install using LinuxGSM:

Add a local user for your server: sudo adduser dayzserver
Switch to the newly added user: su – dayzserver
Download linuxgsm.sh
curl -Lo linuxgsm.sh https://linuxgsm.sh && chmod +x linuxgsm.sh && bash linuxgsm.sh dayzserver
Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions: ./dayzserver install
