How to see (and hide) product reviews in Magento 2

Product reviews play a huge role in building customer trust and influencing buying decisions. Magento 2 gives store owners complete control over how reviews are displayed, moderated, and managed—but many of these options are tucked away in different admin menus.

Let’s walk through how to enable, view, approve, hide, and manage product reviews in Magento 2, even if you’ve never touched these settings before.

Enable product reviews in Magento 2

Before any reviews can show up on your product pages, the feature needs to be turned on globally.

Log in to your Magento Admin Panel. Go to yoursite.com/admin and log in using your administrator credentials.
Navigate to the Configuration settings. In the left-hand sidebar, go to Stores > Settings > Configuration.
Open the Catalog section. Under the Catalog menu in the left panel, click on Catalog again to expand the available sub-settings.
Scroll down to the Product Reviews section. Find the Product Reviews tab and click to expand it. This section controls whether product reviews are enabled and whether customers need to be logged in to write them.
Set ‘Enabled’ to ‘Yes’. Make sure the Enabled dropdown is set to Yes. This allows product reviews to be shown on your storefront.
Decide if guests can write reviews. Set Allow Guests to Write Reviews to Yes if you want anyone (even users without an account) to leave a review. Set it to No if you want to limit this feature to registered users only.
Click Save Config. After making your changes, click the Save Config button in the top right corner of the screen.
Flush the cache (if needed). If you don’t see changes reflected on your storefront, go to System > Cache Management and click Flush Magento Cache. This clears any outdated settings and forces Magento to reload your new configuration.

Approve and manage submitted reviews

Just because a customer submits a review doesn’t mean it shows up right away. By default, Magento requires admin approval for all new reviews.

How to approve or reject a product review:

Go to the review management panel. From the admin sidebar, navigate to Marketing > User Content > Pending Reviews.
Find the review you want to approve. You’ll see a list of reviews that are currently pending. Use the filters at the top to search by product name, status, or customer if needed.
Click ‘Edit’ next to a review. This opens the full review details, including the reviewer’s name, ratings, comments, and current status.
Change the review status. Locate the Status dropdown and change it from Pending to Approved if you want it to appear publicly. If the review is spam or inappropriate, choose Not Approved instead.
Save your changes. Click Save Review in the top right corner to finalize your approval or rejection.

Once a review is approved, it will automatically appear on the product page under the Reviews tab.

Hide product reviews (disable or remove visibility)

Not every store wants to show customer reviews. Whether you’re in a tightly regulated industry or simply want to avoid spam, Magento lets you hide or disable reviews in several ways.

Option 1: Disable reviews globally

This turns off product reviews site-wide.

Go to Stores > Settings > Configuration.
Under Catalog > Catalog > Product Reviews, set Enabled to No.
Click Save Config and flush the cache if needed.

With this setting turned off, no product reviews (existing or new) will appear on any product page.

Option 2: Disable reviews for a single product

You can remove the review tab from a specific product while keeping it active for others.

Go to Catalog > Products.
Click on the product you want to edit.
Scroll down to the Product Reviews tab or Customizable Options, depending on your theme.
Uncheck or remove the review-related blocks or attributes.
Save the product.

Note: Not all themes offer fine-grained control on a per-product basis without custom code.

Option 3: Remove reviews using layout XML

If you want to hide reviews from the frontend without disabling them, you can edit your theme’s layout files.

Create or edit a custom layout XML file in your child theme.
Add the following snippet to remove the review block:
<referenceBlock name=”product.reviews” remove=”true”/>
Deploy static content and clear the cache.

This approach is best for developers or store owners familiar with Magento theme customization.

Customize review settings (ratings, email alerts, visibility)

Magento’s review system can be extended and customized in a few helpful ways.

Add custom rating types

This lets customers give more detailed feedback beyond just one score.

Go to Stores > Attributes > Rating.
Click Add New Rating.
Name your new rating (e.g., “Delivery Speed” or “Packaging”).
Assign it to a store view and click Save Rating.

How to export and analyze product reviews

Magento doesn’t advertise it, but you can export review data for analytics or backup.

View basic review reports:

Go to Reports > Reviews.
Choose from By Customer, By Product, or By Store View.
Review the on-screen charts or export as CSV.

Export all reviews via Data Transfer:

Go to System > Data Transfer > Export.
Choose Entity Type: Review.
Click Continue to generate and download the file.

This CSV file can be used in spreadsheets, data visualization tools, or migrations to new systems.

Export using API or database:

For advanced users, the review table (review and review_detail) in your Magento database contains all necessary fields. Use API calls or SQL queries if you need deeper automation or integration with CRMs.
