A firewall is software and/or hardware that protects your server from unauthorized access. You can think of a firewall as a security guard that examines every piece of network communication to your server. The firewall compares the information received against a list of rules and then handles that traffic according to the rule set (typically allowing or denying the connection). Firewalls can filter traffic by IP address, by network port, and even by type of information/connection. Firewalls can also restrict traffic temporarily or permanently from an IP address that appears to be trying to compromise the server. Firewalls are the essential first line of defense for your server’s security.
