Create a Static Homepage
[wp101 video=”static-homepage”]
In this video, the instructor explains how to replace the default blog-style homepage with a static homepage, giving your site a more professional look—perfect for business or portfolio websites.
1. The Default Homepage
- By default, WordPress shows your latest blog posts on the homepage, listed in chronological order.
- Great for blogs, but not ideal for business or static websites.
2. Creating a Custom Homepage
- To set up a static homepage, you’ll need two pages:
- One to serve as the Homepage
- Another to display your Blog posts
3. Changing Homepage Settings
- Go to Customize from the admin toolbar.
- Select Homepage Settings.
- Switch from Your Latest Posts to A Static Page.
- Choose:
- Homepage: Create a new page (e.g., “Home”).
- Posts Page: Assign the existing Blog page you created earlier.
4. Previewing and Publishing
- Click Publish to save changes.
- The site now displays:
- A static homepage (currently blank, ready for customization).
- A Blog page where posts appear in chronological order.
5. Customizing Your Homepage
- Edit the new homepage to add:
- A featured image
- Introductory text
- Call-to-action elements
- Over time, you can expand it with more blocks (images, buttons, layouts, etc.).
Key Takeaway:
WordPress is not just for blogs—you can set a static homepage to create a professional, business-ready front page, while keeping your blog posts accessible on a separate page. This flexibility lets you design your site exactly the way you want.
