How to Request a Site or Server Migration

Need to move your site? Learn how to request a migration for Linux, Windows, or Nexcess (WordPress/Magento). Use our migration forms.

A server or site migration is the process of moving your website’s data, files, and databases from your old hosting environment to your new one. We offer several paths to help you, including support for Linux servers, Windows servers, and our Nexcess managed applications like WordPress or Magento.

To make this process faster and easier, we have a dedicated form. You can now start your request and provide all the necessary details for your Linux or Windows migration by visiting our new Migration Center at my.liquidweb.com/servers/migration-center.

Prerequisites

  • A Liquid Web or Nexcess account.
  • A Liquid Web fully managed server or a Nexcess plan destination environment you are migrating to.
  • You must have an existing server, or the websites you want to move, hosted on a source environment that is compatible with our migration process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Most of our fully managed server and Nexcess plans include a free migration as part of your new service. You can verify your eligibility by checking your specific plan details. Understand the difference by reading our article Understanding Migration Types.

The time required for a migration varies depending on the amount of data, the complexity of your site, and the connection speed to your old server. Once you submit your request, our team will perform an analysis and provide you with a time estimate. Learn more in our Expectations for a Migrations help doc.

We design our migrations to cause minimal to zero downtime. Our team accomplishes an ‘initial-sync’ by copying your data while your original site remains live. The only planned downtime is during the final “cutover.” This may include a final sync to move any recent changes, which can take a few hours for very large sites. After the sync, you will update your DNS. You can schedule this entire cutover for your lowest-traffic period. Learn more in our Expectations for a Migrations help doc.

You will need to provide our team with administrative access to your old (source) hosting environment. This typically includes credentials for SSH, WHM / cPanel, Plesk, FTP, or Remote Desktop (for Windows). Our Migration forms guide you step-by-step through all the information we need.

Our migrations team will communicate with you through a support case (support ticket) in your my.liquidweb.com account. You can view the status and ask questions by logging into your account and checking your open cases.

A Server Migration (Linux/Windows) typically involves moving your older server environment, including all accounts, data, and configurations onto a newer environment. A Nexcess Application Migration (WordPress/WooCommerce/Magento) is focused on moving a specific website or application into our optimized, managed platform.
