Adding IP Addresses to Your Server
Introduction
While every server comes with a primary Public IP address, your infrastructure may require additional IPs to support specific configurations. Whether you need to isolate email reputation, manage custom Reverse DNS (rDNS) records, or segment traffic for security, you can easily expand your network allocation.
Depending on your server type, you can add up to 7 IPs (VPS) or 3 IPs (Dedicated) directly via the portal.
IP Address Justification Guidelines
Due to the global scarcity of IPv4 addresses, all requests for additional IPs must adhere to ARIN regulations. When requesting an additional IP, you must provide a valid technical justification.
Valid Justifications
- SSL Certificates: You may require a dedicated IP to install an SSL certificate for legacy browser compatibility or specific security configurations.
- Application Requirements: Certain applications (such as custom chat servers, listeners, or gaming servers) that strictly require a unique IP address to function are valid justifications.
- Nameserver Requirements: Specific Top-Level Domain (TLD) registries (such as
.ru) require nameservers to reside on separate subnets (different /24s). This is the only valid justification for requesting IPs on a specific, separate subnet. - Multiple Domains: Hosting multiple distinct domains is a valid justification. However, you must provide a list of the domains you intend to host so our team can verify the request.
Invalid Justifications & Limitations
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Dedicated IPs do not influence search rankings. Google has confirmed that using a shared IP does not negatively impact SEO. For more information, please see Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.
- Email Deliverability: improving email reputation or deliverability is not considered a valid technical justification for a dedicated IP address.
- Class C / Subnet Selections: We cannot fulfill requests for IPs on specific different subnets (e.g., requesting one IP on
69.227.15.xand another on69.227.16.x) for SEO or general hosting purposes. The only exception to this rule is the TLD nameserver requirement mentioned above.
Prerequisites
- Administrative access to your Liquid Web account.
- A Cloud VPS or Dedicated server.
- A valid technical justification for your request.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Log into your my.liquidweb.com account with yourusername and password, orsign in with Google SSO.
- Click the Servers tab on the left-hand navigation menu and select My Servers.
- Click on the name of the server you wish to modify.
- Click on the Networking tab.
- Locate the IP Addresses section. This block displays your currently assigned IPs and the number of “slots” remaining for new addresses. Click the Add another button.
The next steps depend on your specific server type:
For Cloud VPS Servers
Our automated systems can quickly add or remove IPs from a Cloud VPS.
- Linux Servers: A reboot is required to activate the new IP.
- Windows Servers: A reboot is generally not required.
- By default, you can add new IPs. Alternatively, if you have reserved IPs, you can assign an IP from your IP Pool.
- Choose the number of IPs to add, or select from your pool.
- A reboot is required to activate the new IP.
- To reboot immediately, ensure Reboot now and add automatically is toggled ON.
- To delay the reboot, toggle this option OFF. The IP will be reserved but will not function until you manually reboot the server.
- Click Confirm.
- You can track the progress of the addition in the Notifications section of your account.
For Dedicated Servers
Requests for Dedicated servers require manual review by our Networking team.
- Select the Number of IPs you wish to add.
- Enter your Justification and business needs for the additional addresses (refer to the guidelines above).
- Click the Request button.
- This action creates a support case with our Networking department. Please follow along in the case for updates.
Next Steps
- Configure the IP: Once the IP is added to the server, you may need to configure your control panel to recognize it. See Adding IP Addresses Manually in WHM.
- Cleanup: To learn how to remove unused addresses, see Deleting IP Addresses from Your Cloud VPS.
