WordCamps are casual, locally organized conferences that cover everything and anything about WordPress. They have great educational sessions, inspiring sessions, and great networking opportunities. Our team had a great time during WordCamp Atlanta over the past weekend and we sat down with Lindsey Miller, our Partner Manager for Managed WordPress, who attended WordCamp Atlanta 2019.
How was the turnout at WordCamp Atlanta this year?
WordCamp Atlanta (ATL) is one of the largest WordCamps in the country, and they have a strongly committed group with about a dozen local meetup groups that meet regularly.
This particular WordCamp starts camp out with a beginner’s track on Friday, and so many people that I spoke with on Saturday had attended the beginner track and were eager to learn. Most were wanting to start a business, create a hobby blog, or help their employer do better on the web.
What was one of the coolest parts about WordCamp Atlanta 2019?
On Friday night there was the speaker/sponsor dinner and it was held at this super cool location, The Gathering Spot. The amazing Kathy Drewien was there to welcome us in the door, and even though I have “known” her online for years it was the first time meeting her in person. We shared a huge hug, and basically, it was like we have known each other forever.
We connected with a lot of other sponsors and speakers and showed some love for the organizers and volunteers who work so hard putting on a camp the size of ATL.
Tell us more about the main events, speakers, and how things went at the Liquid Web booth.
Saturday was extremely busy. WordCamp Atlanta 2019 sized up to be one of the largest by the sheer number of attendees who came by the booth looking for more information about our Partner Program.
We also had screens up so people could sign up for Tax Tips and Tricks and Creating a Sustainable Business, which also happen to be webinars we are hosting in May. Chris Lema was the keynote and, as always, gave everyone key takeaways. Nathan Ingram, a business coach and regular over at iThemes.com (and a Liquid Web Ambassador), and Andrew Norcross, Developer Advocate at Liquid Web, both drew huge crowds to their talks as well.
It is great to hear from people who come by the booth and learn so much from our Helpful Humans at Liquid Web who give talks at camp. We were also joined by other Helpful Humans from Liquid Web: Carrie Wheeler, our COO; Rhonda Capone, Head of Strategic Programs; Terry Trout, VP of Marketing; and Melanie Kreh, Head of Customer and Marketing Analytics. They all attended several sessions and spent time meeting people at the booth. Carrie was even grabbed by Mark Maunder, Found and CEO at Defiant.com, for a podcast interview!
How was the afterparty at WordCamp Atlanta 2019?
The after party on Saturday night was at the same place, but this time they had fun art in the hallway and were serving bite-sized snacks. There was even a magician, balloon animal creator, and a caricature artist mingling in the crowd entertaining everyone.

Anything cool happen on Sunday? Meet anyone in particular?
Sunday was a much slower pace, but we still had tons of fun and great conversations. I was lucky enough to be joined at the booth by Joe Oesterling, EVP of Technology at Liquid Web.
We also got to meet Adam Walker, the brains behind 48 in 48, a nonprofit that builds 48 websites for 48 nonprofits in 48 hours. He is also half of a for-profit agency in Atlanta doing great work in the non-profit space.
Overall it was a fabulous WordCamp. I got to spend time with a lot of old friends, make new connections, and learn about what cool things people are working on in the WordPress space. I will consider Atlanta a “must attend” camp in the future.
