Best Practices for Data Backup

Posted on | Updated:

Your data is crucial and you should never have to be without it. Protecting that data from catastrophes should be top priority and making sure all of your important data is backed up is the best way to ensure you always have access to your information. While there are many services that can help you backup your data, it is important to make sure the process is done right. With Liquid Web Guardian, we can continuously capture your entire system configuration to an off-site facility, which allows for easy recovery of your information based on our hourly backups. Liquid Web Guardian utilizes a few key best practices to ensure your data is protected and available when you need it.

  • Continuous Backups
Automatically saving a copy of every change made to your data allows you to restore data to minutes before the loss occurred. This method is less resource intensive than traditional methods and is done with a journal of disk changes.
  • Off-site Backups
If your backed up data is stored in the same location as your main hosting environment it is still vulnerable to loss. Off-site backups protect your data from loss that may occur due to disaster at the main location. This is a smart addition to your disaster recovery plan.
  • Incremental Snapshots
Incremental backups provide a backup of any files that have changed or are new since the last incremental backup. Backing up only the new or changed data since the last full backup creates consistent, point-in-time, system-wide backup images. This method minimizes the amount of time needed to perform the backup.
  • Bare-Metal Disaster Recovery
With Bare-Metal Disaster Recovery, servers are restored directly from a disk-based backup, rather than from an operating system on a partitioned drive. This increases the speed of a complete system recovery from a failure.
  • Sector-Based Backups
Reading your hard disk volumes at the lowest possible level, or the sector level, improves performance and recovery of your system. The method bypasses the file system, is performed while the server is online, and uses significantly less I/O requests than traditional methods.
  • Disk Safe Data Encryption
Encrypting your data on our nodes allows for your backups to be safely stored and protected. This feature must be configured with a fresh backup snapshot and can’t be disabled later.

Following these best practices with Liquid Web Guardian will keep you and your data protected. Liquid Web Guardian can ensure easy data recovery and protect against full data loss with continuous and off-site backups, in even the most extreme catastrophic conditions.
