Progression & Restriction Settings

LearnDash quizzes include a variety of settings that allow you to control when learners can access quizzes, how they progress, and what restrictions apply. These settings ensure quizzes are aligned with your instructional goals and create a consistent learner experience.

Quiz Access Settings

  • Quiz Release Schedule
    • By default, quizzes are available immediately.
    • You can “drip” quizzes so they are released:
      • Based on the number of days since enrollment, or
      • On a specific calendar date.
    • This works the same way as drip settings for lessons and topics.
  • Quiz Prerequisite
    • Require learners to pass another quiz before they can access the current one.
    • Useful for building structured assessments where knowledge builds progressively.
  • Allowed Users
    • Restrict quiz access to registered users only.
    • Especially useful when:
      • Embedding a quiz via shortcode on a standalone page, or
      • Running open courses but wanting only registered users to take quizzes.

Progression and Restriction Settings

  • Passing Score
    • The default passing score is 80%, but this can be customized to fit your needs.
  • Quiz Certificate
    • Award a certificate when learners pass a quiz.
    • Choose which certificate to award.
    • The certificate threshold can differ from the passing score (e.g., a quiz may require 70% to pass, but 90% to earn a certificate).
  • Enable Quiz Saving
    • Ideal for long quizzes.
    • Allows learners to save progress and return later without losing their answers.
    • If disabled, learners must complete the quiz in one sitting.
  • Restrict Quiz Retakes
    • By default, learners can retake quizzes unlimited times.
    • Restrict retakes to a set number (e.g., 5 attempts).
    • Apply retry restrictions to:
      • Registered users only
      • Anonymous users only
      • All users (if left blank)
    • Retakes can be reset manually:
      • For anonymous users: via a button.
      • For registered users: by deleting failed quiz attempts from their WordPress profile.
  • Question Completion Requirement
    • Enforce that all questions must be answered before submission.
    • Prevents learners from skipping questions.
  • Time Limit
    • Set a timer (e.g., 15 minutes) for quiz completion.
    • Once the timer ends, the quiz auto-submits.
    • Any unanswered questions are marked with zero points.

Why This Matters

These settings give you complete control over how quizzes function—from access and scheduling to scoring, retries, and certificates. By customizing them, you can create fair, structured assessments that keep learners accountable and aligned with your course goals.

Tip: Combine prerequisites, time limits, and certificates for a professional assessment flow that motivates learners while maintaining academic integrity.
