What is LibreOffice?
Do you need a free high-quality set of office applications for your Linux box? LibreOffice is a comprehensive open source office suite with several quite useful applications like a word processor, spreadsheet editor, and presentation creator. It is highly valued for its compatibility with various file formats and strong community support. Its open source nature allows users to access a full suite of tools that are compatible with popular applications without expensive licenses, making LibreOffice particularly helpful in personal and professional settings.
In the context of AlmaLinux, LibreOffice provides a cost-effective solution for users who need robust office software. It stands out among alternatives due to its zero-cost licensing and extensive feature set, which includes support for multiple languages and advanced functionalities. LibreOffice can be easily installed or removed as needed, and users seeking additional features or support can access help packs to enhance their language experience.
Prerequisites including the display server, desktop environment, and GUI
These components are required for the install:
- Operating system. AlmaLinux 8 installed on your Liquid Web server.
- SSH access. The SSH access of root or sudo access is required for installation.
- Graphical user interface (GUI). If you don’t already have one, install a desktop environment on your Liquid Web server:
Preparing the server with a GUI for running graphical apps for word processing, presentation authoring, and spreadsheet editing
LibreOffice requires a GUI to run its graphical applications.
1. Preparing the server with a GUI
Option A — GNOME
This command installs GNOME and the necessary components for a complete graphical desktop environment:
sudo dnf groupinstall "Server with GUI"Option B — KDE Plasma
This command installs KDE Plasma along with its applications and desktop environment components:
sudo dnf groupinstall "KDE Plasma Workspaces"2. Preparing the server with a display server and desktop environment packages
Display server
Ensure a display server, such as the X Window System called X11, is installed and running if you’re using a remote GUI setup. For GNOME or KDE, a display server is generally included with the installations, but you can ensure that X11 has been installed and enabled using these commands:
sudo dnf install xorg-x11-server-Xorg
sudo systemctl enable gdm # For GNOME
# OR
sudo systemctl enable sddm # For KDEDesktop environment packages
Install the additional packages required for the GUI desktop environment if they are not already installed.
GNOME typically installs with all the necessary packages when using the Server with GUI group. However, if you need to install additional GNOME utilities and applications, execute the following command:
sudo dnf install gnome-tweaks gnome-shell-extensions gnome-terminal nautilusFor KDE Plasma, if you want additional KDE utilities and applications, execute the following command:
sudo dnf install kde-plasma-addons konsole dolphin kdepim-runtimeTo install LibreOffice for Linux on AlmaLinux, please follow the below steps in the next sections.
Step #1. Access your Liquid Web server
To install LibreOffice for Linux on your Liquid Web server, follow the steps in the next sections to access the server via SSH.

The method will vary by operating system:
- Mac/Linux. Open the Terminal application from your Applications menu.
- Windows. Open Command Prompt by searching for it in the start menu.
1.2. Connect to your Liquid Web server
Execute the SSH command, replacing your_username with your provided SSH username and your_server_ip with your server’s IP address or hostname:
ssh your_username@your_server_ip1.3. Enter your password
When prompted, enter your SSH password to authenticate.
1.4. Verify your connection
Upon successful connection, you will see a command prompt indicating that you are logged in.
Step #2. Update your AlmaLinx system
