Editing File and Folder Permissions on Windows Servers
Editing permissions for folders and files on Windows servers means navigating to those resources using Remote Desktop Protocol then adjusting the Security permissions on each resource that you want to update. If the server is connected to an Active Directory (AD) structure, you may need to take additional steps to identify local permissions versus AD based permissions.
| NOTE: |
| If your server is a Plesk Fully-Managed server, please adjust File and Folder permissions inside of Plesk (see Managing File Permissions in Plesk). Adjusting permissions outside of Plesk is not supported and may result in Plesk reverting any changes you have made during the next maintenance period. |
Generally, you can adjust permissions by right-clicking on a folder or file and selecting Properties. From the Properties dialogue, you can select the Security tab and adjust the permissions for each user or group as needed.
If your Core-Managed or Self-Managed Windows server is managed using Liquid Web’s Active Directory (the recommended configuration), you will need to take additional steps when adding a new user to the permissions for the resource.
- When you first click Add, a dialogue box will appear asking for credentials. Click Cancel.
- Click Locations on the right side of the Select Users dialog box. You’ll only need to change the Location if cus.win.liquidweb.com is the location shown in the dialogue.
- Another dialogue will appear asking for credentials. Click Cancel. Continue clicking Cancel until the Locations dialog box appears.
- Select your server name from the top of the list (this may be just a series of numbers and letters, but it will have the computer icon beside it).
- Once the local server is selected as the Location, you can add users or adjust permissions as needed.
For additional information about adding users to the server, see Adding Remote Desktop Users.
