Understanding Migration Types
As we learned in our article Preparing For a Site Migration to Liquid Web, migrations can be a scary thing when you don’t understand all that goes into requesting, performing, and completing them. But if you know what to expect, and have the information needed at hand, your migration will go smoothly. One of the most important things to know is what is supported during your migration and what is not. This article will explore the types of migrations Liquid Web offers and what is supported and what is not.
Fully Supported Migrations
“Fully Supported” means that we will be able to provide a comprehensive migration. These types of migrations are generally available when you have root-level SSH access to the source server, and the source and target servers are running the same control panel (either Plesk or cPanel). Some of our fully supported migrations include:
- External full cPanel to cPanel migrations with root access.
- Internal OS upgrade migrations to identically paneled servers.
- Internal partial server migrations to identically paneled servers.
These type of migrations are generally straight-forward as long as you relay in your case the usernames of accounts you wish to copy, root-level credentials and SSH access method, as well as any customized programs or processes you’ve installed to help your server run smoothly.
Note: |
| Not all customized programs and processes installed on your server will be supported. Please see our article Management and Support Levels for details about support offerings. Make sure to clearly identify all customizations you’ve made to the server and your sites for the best possible migration outcome. |
Unsupported Migrations
These “Unsupported” migrations are outside the scope of our managed support and we are unable to provide migrations for them through our internal team. For instance:
- Core or Unmanaged target servers (these servers do not come with Liquid Web’s managed support, under which migrations are provided).
- Source servers which are running applications that are incompatible with your new hosting environment, or which we do not support.
- Extremely large data volumes (e.g. very large and active databases).
- Migrations between Windows and Linux servers.
Your Migration specialist will let you know if your migration is not supported, and in many cases can advise you on developing an alternative strategy for your migration to Liquid Web.
If you aren’t sure if we are able to perform a migration for you, we recommend that you submit a Support case to get in touch with a Migration specialist to review your request and inform you if we are able to accomplish your migration and the steps needed in order to complete it.
