ESET Antivirus Engine Updates
In an effort to keep customer servers protected and to ensure the highest stability, Liquid Web will periodically update the installed antivirus engine on customer servers. These updates will be reviewed as released by the manufacturer and checked for update requirements prior to being pushed.
Our general update policy for the engine is as follows:
- Update to the latest build of the version currently running
- Example: 7.1.45.0 to 7.1.60.0
- When a version nears the end of support, update to the latest supported version
- Example: 6.5.200.0 to 7.1.60.0
Definition Updates
Virus definitions are a listing of known viruses and include instructions for the engine on how to detect them. Systems automatically check for new definitions roughly every hour and do not require a reboot or user interaction to apply them.
Build Updates
Updated builds provide bug fixes and other optimizations to the engine but do not add or remove features nor change the overall functionality of the product. By routinely updating to the latest build, we are able to patch potential issues in the software without conflicting with existing software or applications already existing on the server, providing a good balance between protection and stability. Further, these updates typically do not require a reboot to install, but do recommend a reboot at some point to fully patch the software.
Version Updates
Updated versions (major or minor), in addition to fixing bugs, add or remove functionality, which could conflict with software already running on servers. Further, version updates typically require a reboot either during the install process or post installation to resume functionality. As such, these updates are only pushed when a version is nearing EoL (End-of-Life) or upon request (see below).
Recommended Reboot
Engine updates that only recommend an update will be pushed to servers at ~8AM on the second Tuesday of the month as needed. This update schedule is made to coincide with the traditional Windows update schedule of releasing updates on the second Tuesday of the month so that the requested reboot can take place when the server restarts after installing Windows updates.
During the period between the update installation and reboot, the server is still protected using the existing engine and drivers; however, any of the items that were corrected in the new build will still be present until the server is rebooted.
Required Reboot
Occasionally an update requires a reboot to either install the update or continue protection. In these cases, customers will be notified prior to these updates being installed and given a timeframe during which we can schedule an install. If we do not hear back from you in this time frame, the update will be pushed to the server at the time mentioned in the email (typically the second Saturday of the month at 3AM).
Self-service Option
If you would like to verify you are running the latest version of the antivirus engine at any time, you are welcome to run the following command line command from an administrative command prompt (note that the server will reboot once the uninstallation completes):
wmic product where name="ESET File Security" call uninstall /nointeractive
Once the server reboots, the ESET Management Agent* will check into the management server and download and install the latest version of ESET we currently support (typically within 20 minutes).
NOTE: |
| If you uninstall the ESET Management Agent, the server will not be able to install the updated antivirus engine. Our system does monitor for servers that do not check in, but these are reviewed on a weekly basis, so your server may end up unprotected for longer than desired. |
Other Update Options
Outside of uninstalling ESET File Security yourself and rebooting, you are welcome to contact our support team and ask us to ensure your server is running the latest antivirus engine. In most cases, if the latest engine is not already installed, we will request a time to restart the server, at which point we will follow the same steps outlined in the self-service section.
